About the Event

An Ongoing Struggle

Blood Pearls is a short documentary film on the ongoing struggle of the indigenous Palaw’an and Molbog to reclaim their ancestral lands and waters and to protect their homes from a corporate landgrab for an ecotourism project in Marihangin, Bugsuk, Balabac, Palawan, Philippines. This Constellate event will screen the film and will feature an artist talk with filmmaker Känakän Balintagos aka Aureus Solito who is a Palaw’an. Our aim is to amplify the issue and explore ways to support and build international solidarity.
Känakän Balintagos is an award-winning filmmaker well-known for (among others) his first feature film Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros (2005) which won 15 international awards and Busong (Palawan Fate) (2011) which was selected at the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2011.

Artist Talk

Kanakan-Balintagos

Auraeus Solito, also known as Kanakan-Balintagos, is a Palawán-Filipino filmmaker and indigenous peoples rights advocate who comes from a lineage of shaman-kings from the Palawán tribe. He was one of the first to be born outside of his tribal land of South Palawan. He was born in Manila and, after graduating from the Philippine Science High School, studied theater at the University of the Philippines, where he received a degree in Theater Arts. One of the leading independent filmmakers in the Philippines, he was chosen as part of in Take 100, The Future of Film in 2010. This book, published by Phaidon Press, New York, is a survey featuring 100 emerging film directors from around the world who have been selected by 10 internationally prominent film festival directors.

Dr. Anne Frances N. Sangil

Anne Frances N. Sangil is an Associate Professor at De La Salle University where she teaches art appreciation, Philippine and world literatures, and popular culture. She was a writing fellow for Film Studies for the Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center, and served as the Assistant Editor of the Film volume of the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Arts. Frances is also a member of the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino.

Dr. Shirley O. Lua

Shirley O. Lua is an associate professor of literature and cultural studies at De La Salle University (DLSU). She currently chairs the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the film critics group that confers the annual Gawad Urian on the best Philippine movies. She co-edited Direk: Essays on Filipino Filmmakers (with Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr., DLSU Publishing House and Sussex Academic Press, 2018).
