The University of Calgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts, in the Faculty of Arts, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Drama (Directing). The anticipated start date is July 1 2017.
The successful candidate will establish and maintain an active professional and externally funded research-creation program, teach graduate and undergraduate courses in the area of their specialization as well as additional courses in Drama, and contribute to the graduate program. Service within a university setting or the wider community is also expected.
The successful candidate must have a terminal degree (MFA) and have achieved national and/or international recognition within their career. The successful candidate must display evidence of excellence in both teaching and research or research-creation, including performances, presentations and publications. Candidates may demonstrate research and/or research-creation excellence through publicly presented performances, publications, and a strong record of professional and externally funded productivity. Evidence of excellence in teaching should be demonstrated via a convincing statement of teaching philosophy, strong teaching evaluations, and a clear record of commitment to undergraduate and graduate teaching, student supervision, and mentorship. Preference will be given to candidates who:
– possess a wide range of demonstrated Directing expertise, including (but not limited to) text-based performance, theatrical devising and/or performance creation, and immersive and/or participatory performance;
– have expertise and can teach in the secondary area(s) of Actor training and/or Theatre History;
– can expand and enrich the SCPA’s intercultural awareness and expertise base.
The School of Creative and Performing Arts is a community of practicing creators, performers and scholars who, with expert technical and administrative support, are dedicated to the education of artists and critical thinkers in the context of a University devoted to the formation of intelligent and engaged citizens. In addition to a deep engagement with the foundation of their chosen discipline, students have the opportunity enrich their education through structured encounters with the other disciplines in the School. Additional graduate degrees in interarts performance are currently in development. As such, experience and/or expertise in interarts and interdisciplinary practice and research will be an asset.
