The School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Production and Design at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, starting July 2019. We seek an artist specializing in spatial and material design for live performance and other time-based practices, with a breadth of experience in one or more of the following areas: scenography, spatial practices including installation, immersive performance, site-responsive/specific performance, eco-scenography, sustainable design, and expanded approaches to costume design. The successful candidate should have significant experience working collaboratively within new work creation.
The Production and Design program utilizes an intensive, design-led approach to training and emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to arts production. Applicants must have a vibrant and continuing artistic practice that reflects the latest material and aesthetic developments, along with a commitment to developing artistic collaborations in an interdisciplinary environment.
The successful candidate will be required to teach within the Production and Design program which encompasses progressive training in design and production processes; and culminates with practicums in scenography, lighting, projection, costume, sound, technical direction and stage management. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the advancement and growth of the Production and Design area, assist in student recruitment and academically mentor students. Additionally, the position will include committee responsibilities, supervision of graduate students and occasional graduate level teaching. The successful candidate will maintain a robust artistic practice and work with the School to advance the concepts of performance creation and design.
Requirements for the position include a graduate degree (or one close to completion) in an area of production or design for the performing arts or a related professional field; and a serious artistic practice. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or the clear promise for excellence in research and post secondary teaching. The study of production and design in the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University is distinctive in Canada for its focus on interdisciplinary training and new work creation through devised processes.
Located in a dynamic neighbourhood in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Simon Fraser University’s School for the Contemporary Arts has a national reputation for its innovative approach to fostering contemporary art. The School is an interdisciplinary fine and performing arts and scholarly program that offers a BA in Art, Performance and Cinema Studies and BFAs in Dance, Film, Music, Theatre and Visual Art, as well as an interdisciplinary MFA and an MA in Comparative Media Arts. The Production and Design Area is deeply involved in all areas, whether it is through work on Dance or Theatre Main Stage Performances, student productions, Visual Art installations, site-specific work or production and design for Film. The School’s work is strengthened through its relationship to various community partners such as the acclaimed international PuSH Festival.
