The Stanford Arts Institute invites applications for one-year visiting fellowships. Fellows are expected to produce excellent transformative work that advances the 2018-19 Fellowship Theme: “Creative Cities: The Role of Art in Reimagining Cities.” Fellows will spend the year in residence under the auspices of the Stanford Arts Institute.

Led by Peggy Phelan, the Denning Family Director of SAI and Professor of English and Theater & Performance Studies, the Stanford Arts Institute seeks to advance the arts as a mode of thinking across the wide-ranging intellectual and artistic resources of Stanford University. It offers courses, hosts lectures, and curates a variety of innovative programs highlighting scholarly and artistic work for the Stanford community.

The Creative Cities fellowship seeks candidates with a strong record of scholarly research and/or creative work dedicated to exploring the intersection of art and urban life. SAI intends to make two appointments for the 2018-19 academic year, ideally inviting one artist and one scholar. We are interested in candidates whose work reaches across disciplines (such as economics, geography, public policy, urban design) as well as artistic media, and we particularly welcome work that takes up questions of globalism and art.

Eligibility and Requirements

Fellowships are for one full academic year, and require the fellow to be in residence at Stanford during Autumn, Winter, and Spring Quarters (mid-September 2018 through mid-June 2019). Candidates will normally have an MFA or interdisciplinary Ph.D. in the arts. Independent artists and scholars must demonstrate artistic or scholarly achievement equivalent to a relevant terminal degree. Fellows will be expected to teach one undergraduate course and contribute to University-wide working groups and seminars. Fellows will also have the opportunity to present their work in events open to the public.

Fellows will be chosen by a multidisciplinary selection committee on the basis of the promise of the proposed project, the originality and distinction of the candidate’s previous work, and the candidate’s perceived ability to contribute to the intellectual and artistic life of Stanford.

There are no citizenship requirements for these fellowships; non-U.S. nationals are encouraged to apply.

Stanford is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to diversity. It welcomes applications from women and members of minority groups, as well as others who would bring additional dimensions to the university’s research and teaching missions.
